When Opportunity Knocks…

Knock-knock

Hey, I think someone’s at the door. What are you waiting for? Fling it wide open.

It’s probably a tall, dark, hunk of an opportunity waiting to happen!

I’m an opportuneur. My definition of an opportuneur is “someone who takes advantage of opportunities and turns them into something meaningful.”- Melanie Young

make hay while the sun shines

  1. FaceBook reminds me it had been exactly a year since I met my half-sister.
  2. My sister’s 40thbirthday is a few days away.
  3. My mom calls to say my little brother is coming to town on the long weekend.
  4. I do not have to work because it is a long weekend. I will also go home!
  5. I dream that I invite my half-sister.
  6. I call my mom to okay inviting my half-sister.
  7. Then, I message my half-sister. She has the weekend off although she usually doesn’t.
  8. My half-sister and I drive from opposite directions to my mom’s. My siblings are surprised to see me but shocked to see her.

We help my mom finish making the food. A few aunts and a cousin show up and we eat a delicious meal together. Some of us clean up, others take the kids to the park. Then, my older brother goes back to the fields while the sun is shining, my half-sister heads home in one direction, and I head home in the other. Watching the combines and swathers in the field, I can’t stop marvelling at how amazing it feels to have leaped towards this opportunity when I could just as easily have shrugged it away.

Hey, What’s that in your lap?

Something unexpected falls into your lap. Do you:

A) Ignore it. There’s nothing in your lap unless you acknowledge it.

B) Shake it off and pretend it didn’t happen in case someone else also noticed. It could be embarrassing.

C)Pick it up and check it out. There’s nothing more delectable than an opportunity waiting to unfold! And it’s in your lap right now!

D) Put on some latex gloves and take it to the lab for analysis.

Truth be told, I’m hoping you picked option C because, oh my goodness, opportunity knocks at every turn on the road!  Usually, we’re just not that tuned in or over-analyze things so much we pretend we didn’t hear the subtle sounds—I used to pick option B a lot of the time. It’s easier that way, but you end up missing out on a lot of opportunities.

Noticing More irons in my fire

These days more than ever, I am attuned to the irons finding their ways into my fire, and my world is opening up. As I’ve mentioned before, this year was about facing my fear of public speaking. Several public speaking opportunities fell into my lap and I snatched them up. The other day, a new friend mentioned joining a Toastmasters club—and has kindly invited me along. It’s an “early risers” group that meets at 7 a.m. and I am definitely not a morning person, but I plan on becoming one–if only a “Tuesday-morning” person. I have a gut feeling that this is going to help me strike gold.

Strike While the Iron is Hot

Next time chance falls into your lap, take a leap of faith and study it from every angle.

And when you hear a knock at the door, just run. Fling that door wide open with both hands. Who knows what discoveries might be waiting on the other side of that door.

While you’re waiting for that knock at your door, take some time to read this amazing article by Melanie Young. Maybe you are an opportuneur like me!
